The basic tracks were cut at Electric Lady, the studio Jimi Hendrix built for himself, and overdubs were done at RPM, also in New York. In addition to the three musicians mentioned, Hellborg's fellow Mahavishnu members, Mitch Forman and Danny Gottlieb both helped on a track each. The tapes were then brought back to Sweden and mixed at the DEM studio in Lund. After the record was released in Europe, Hellborg toured with Bernard Fowler and two Swedish musicians and made a series of television shows in Germany and Scandinavia.

A Pale Blue Dot
Red Snapper

Formats:
LCD72 [CD]
20/10/2008

Once again back…Red Snapper return from the outer reaches to bring you six brand new tracks and once again they are a rocking 3 piece with firing saxophone. And once again it’s impossible to define the sound they make…afro jazz, krautrock, rockabilly, hip hop and funk all bubble in their dub melting pot.

The album was recorded live in concert with Darius Kedros on mixing /dub duty and live in the studio with Tim Holmes of Death In Vegas.New sax (and clarinet) man Tom Challenger brings back the edge to make these recordings truly sizzle. Anyone who has caught them live will know what a unique and powerful live band they are. A Pale Blue Dot is both document and mission statement. The album also features radical new re-interpretations of 2 of the tracks, one apiece by Kelpe and Subway, stretching the future jazz vibe riiiiight out. So there you have it an album that feels so good, so right, so now.

For anyone who needs it, here’s a very brief recap on the Snapper to date:

1994 Red Snapper formed in Hammersmith, London / release 3 ep’s on Dean Thatcher’s Flaw label / After show at Glastonbury they sign to Warp records / 1996 debut album ‘Prince Blimey’ released / remixes for Garbage, David Holmes, Lamb, Sabres Of Paradise etc / 1998 ‘Making Bones’ album released feat MC Det and Alison David / tours with Massive Attack, Bjork and The Prodigy / 2000 3rd and final album for Warp ‘Our Aim Is To Satisfy’ released / Red Snapper decide to take a break / 2003 Lo recordings release the ‘Red Snapper’ album, a collection of unreleased tracks with live versions and remixes / an album of mixes released by Lo under the title ‘Redone’ / After 7 years off Red Snapper get back to it and play the Big Chill festival / dates all over Europe / new recordings for ‘A Pale Blue Dot’ album.

Fast One by Paul Cain

Originally written in 1931-1932 as a series of short stories for Black Mask magazine, Fast One became the basis for Paul Cain's one and only full-length novel. (A collection of short stories Seven Slayers also exists.)

I've done a little research into speed-reading, which is probably evident from the number of books I read. Some books lend themselves to this approach, and Fast One is a book I was able to thoroughly enjoy and follow by flipping through the pages as fast as my brain could register what was going on. In fact, I'm guessing this is probably the preferred way to read this book. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

This and Seven Slayers can both be found for free download in several formats at the following website:

Cotton Jones "Paranoid Coccoon"

Check out this album - Check out this band!
May not be for everyone - kind of a relaxed vibe.
I believe this may be the first band I've gotten into from Maryland?
Frank Zappa's not a band and they are way better than Good Charlotte.
David Byrne's from Maryland but not the Talking Heads.
They will be performing at Calvin College Tuesday, Feb 24th.
Highly Recommended.

Background to Danger by Eric Ambler

I think I like the original title Uncommon Danger a little bit better. This was released in 1937 and the title was changed for the U.S. release. This is Eric Ambler's 2nd novel. I haven't read anything else but from what I understand most of his book have similar themes, involving ordinary people getting caught up in the world of politics and espionage. This one features a journalist who put inadvertently himself in danger due his own financial distress.

Lester Dent's Sail

I love books.google.com- if you haven't check it out yet, it's a huge library of published and unpublished work available at your fingertips!
And it's supposed to be getting even better....

I had previously mentioned an upcoming unpublished novel by Lester Dent coming out on Hard Case Crime. Many other blogs also have been talking about this and a couple have mentioned a few short stories out there featuring the character "Oscar Sail"- well, while looking around the internet I happened to find the complete text of the first Oscar Sail short "Sail" from the anthology Murder on Deck! available in it's complete form on google. So anyway, if you are curious to check it out for yourself, you shouldn't have any trouble looking it up and reading it for yourself! Enjoy.
